I’ve been a huge fan of the concept of threading for some time now. The technique doesn’t create those pesky red bumps, lasts longer than waxing, and all it takes is a little string. So I was so excited when Wink Threading Salon contacted me to do an honest review of their salon and services.
Wink has been open in West Village (on the same strip as Pinkberry) since March of 2010 (coming up on a 3 year anniversary!) and is a threading salon only. No nail services, massages or facials so the focus is solely on threading.
Threading has become a huge trend and demand has been high for places to offer the service. Wink’s owner, Keyur Patel, says that his decision to open up the business came pretty naturally:
“My wife was driving 15-20 minutes out to Richardson or Irving to get threaded. This was the case because most threading salons are located in areas with a large Indian population. And once she got to the salons in those areas, the wait was usually 30-45 minutes. The final problem, in my opinion, was the complete lack of customer service and cleanliness at those types of salons. I just thought there had to be a better option for people who wanted threading. So I did my due diligence and found that threading was gaining popularity everywhere and made the decision to start the business.”
Prices are competitive given the location and surrounding businesses. A basic eyebrow threading service starts at $12 and an upper lip thread starts at $8.
I made my appointment for Monday and was warmly greeted by Maggie. The salon is fairly small with only 4 chairs available for services. I was quickly greeted by Sushma, my technician who would be doing my eyebrows. She asked me what shape I wanted, to which I responded “just a clean-up”. I didn’t want to confess I haven’t had my eyebrows threaded in who knows how many years and little did I know that there were different shapes available! She quickly got started and in less than 5 minutes I was done! The threading was relatively painless (they’re taking hairs off your skin people, pain is part of the deal) and super quick.
Afterwards I stayed to take some pictures, talked to Maggie about any current promotions and was on my way.
So if you are looking for a place that only does threading, can do a service quickly on your lunch break and is competitively priced, give Wink a shot. They been featured on D Magazine and have tons of positive reviews on Yelp. Trust me, you won’t be disappointed!
